The Latin American Journal of Economic Development (LAJED), in its 22 years of uninterrupted biannual publications, has established itself as a benchmark for the dissemination of national and international research, achieving high standards of quality and academic relevance. This achievement is the result of the joint efforts of the Department of Economics and the Instituto de Investigaciones Socio-Económicas (IISEC) of the Universidad Católica Boliviana “San Pablo” the Sociedad de Economistas de Bolivia y la Academia Boliviana de Ciencias Económicas, institutions committed to promoting research and influencing public opinion.
This issue brings together six articles addressing various topics related to economic and social development in Bolivia and Latin America. The first examines the distributional effects of the recent devaluation in Bolivia, showing how the exchange rate transfer affected households differently depending on their consumption structure. The second evaluates the performance of machine learning models for forecasting inflation in contexts of stability and crisis, highlighting their potential to improve economic policy decision-making. A third article presents a national assessment of the ecosystem services generated by Protected Areas and Indigenous Territories, highlighting their economic and environmental contribution. The fourth analyzes CO₂ emissions associated with deforestation and forest fires in Bolivia between 2010 and 2023, underscoring the urgency of strengthening conservation policies. The fifth studies labor mobility in Bolivia from a gender perspective, using Markov chains to show persistent inequalities in occupational trajectories. Finally, the sixth article reviews recent trends in the circular economy as applied to the tourism sector, identifying advances, challenges, and opportunities to improve competitiveness through sustainable practices.
